Background on the Ten Outstanding

Young Minnesotans Program

The Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans program is Minnesota’s only statewide recognition program for outstanding young leaders. The program acknowledges the efforts of young leaders that have contributed to our state through their service, thought and influence, community involvement, or entrepreneurship.

Honorees reflect the vast diversity of young people that are making a difference in their community- whether they get involved through business, nonprofit and community organizations, or government service. TOYM is a program that recognizes and brings together a broad cross-section of young people that have devoted themselves to improving their community.

Started in 1950, the Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans (TOYM) program has recognized the leadership of over 400 young people across the state. Past awardees have included young up-and-coming leaders Walter Mondale, Marlene Johnson, Dave Winfield, Tim Penny, Paul Douglas, Matt Blair, Wheelock Whitney, Joe Senser, and Martin Sabo.

Background on the Outstanding Young Farmer Program

Nominees submit information about their farm, background, and knowledge of the industry and are judged on the following criteria:

  1. Progress in agricultural career
  2. Extent of soil and water conservation practices
  3. Contributions to the well-being of the community, state, and nation

The winner of the Minnesota Outstanding Yong Farmer program will go on to compete in the national OYF program against OYF winners from other states in which four will be named National Outstanding Young Farmers. Minnesota has had 11 national winners, including three of them in the last five years!
