2010 Outstanding Young Farmer Dale Shelly, Princeton, MN

A third-generation farmer, Dale Shelly farms 2,700 acres of corn, soybeans, oats, and alfalfa outside Princeton, MN, along with a herd of dairy and beef cattle. Despite unpredictable weather, low commodity prices, and high prices for fertilizer and other inputs, he has not only been able to survive, but thrive.  Shelly has been recognized in the Minnesota Farm Guide in a family operation story, and by Pioneer for his performance with his non-irrigated seed crops. His mentorship to the next generation of farmers has yielded him an honorary award from the Future Farmers of America. Shelly believes that showing kids how to farm teaches them responsibility, as well as a solid work ethic and how to build business partnerships. He also serves on the board of directors of the Mille Lacs chapter of the American Dairy Association and Federated Coops and is a member of the Agstar Council.
